The Secret Agent Man
In my line of work, I’ve had to assume many false identities (personalities) to
complete my missions. So, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered that
it is now possible to easily create a wide variety of virtual personalities (chat bots)
for use on the Web. NeuroStudio, made by Neuromedia, Inc. (http://www.neuromedia.com/), is an You can use NeuroStudio to build chat bots that automatically and autonomously advertise products and services, entertain, respond to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), provide customer support, and even police discussion groups to help control inappropriate behavior. Writing one of these chat bots with NeuroStudio is a relatively simple process and, with the built-in Web (HTTP) server, placing it on the Web is a piece of cake. I found the NeuroStudio development environment to be intuitive and fun to use. The only criticism I have about the interface is that when switching between windows in NeuroStudio, I found that the only place you can click to bring a window into the foreground was on its title bar. This was rather cumbersome and irritating at times. NeuroStudio comes with a fairly complete set of online bot development documentation, including a tutorial, user manual, bot scripting tips, and details about putting a bot on the Web, along with extensive scripting references such as the GeRBiL Language Manual. I did have some minor problems with the instructions in the HTML-based tutorial. They were incomplete at times and a bit out of date for the current version. For example, the tutorial neglected to mention that you must manually add new files to your project before they can be compiled as part of your bot. Aside from these minor nuisances, this is an extremely easy-to-use and powerful bot development and deployment tool.
