As far back as 2001, according to a report by the Privacy Foundation, more than 14 million Americans were under continuous electronic surveillance at their workplace. At the same time, the American Management Association estimated that fully three-quarters of major US companies monitor their employees' Internet activity at some time. And of course, these figures don't take into account the people who are spied upon at home by computer pirates or their own husband or wife, colleagues or friends. While electronic surveillance may not be a general practice, it is still worth knowing how to unmask the spies.
Xcleaner is one of the programs that actively fights back against this type of intrusion, and helps protect individual privacy. This program seeks out spyware on your computer, using a regularly updated database of known spies. Unusually, it requires no installation: it comes with just one single file, ready to be executed.
When Xcleaner detects a potential spy, it attempts to uninstall the program. If ever if is unable to do so, it provides a link to the spy's database record, including its name, description and origins so that it can be rooted out. As well as hunting down spyware, Xcleaner also deals with adware such as Gator, those unwanted programs that launch ads while you browse the Web.
In addition, Xcleaner contains some useful bonuses. It has a password generator, for better password security. Finally, Xcleaner helps to clean up all the traces of your activity on the Internet: cookies, the contents of the cache (in Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL, Opera); the list of recently opened files, the logs of on-line conversations and ICQ chats, etc. It is certainly exhaustive.
Given that Xcleaner is able to automatically delete information from your computer, it is recommended to become familiar with its features before doing any major cleaning up. Don't forget to uncheck the folders that you want to keep. Even the most simple tools can present a risk if used incorrectly! It should also be noted that certain features are not available in the free version of Xcleaner. But overall Xcleaner is a useful addition to the fight to keep your computer clean of undesirable software products.
