Personalized information management with Net-Snippets
http://www.botspot.com/Intelligent_Agent/602.html

A neat tool that enables you to capture, annotate, categorize and share information across a network, Net Snippets personalizes the management of online information. All types of information can be brought together in a single interface, in a quick and intuitive process.

'Snippets' are the pieces of information that you save with the Net-Snippets software. These extracts can be clipped from Web pages in HTML format, but also from other sources such as e-mail messages PDF or Word files etc. All that it takes to add a snippet is to drag&drop the text and/or images that you want onto Net-Snippets.

Each Snippet contains, in addition to the selected information, a title and a link to the source. Most importantly, comments or notes can be easily included and saved alongside the original information. Further elements can be added, such as the level of importance, keywords to simplify retrieval via the internal search engine, your e-mail, name and company, etc. The Snippets can be organised into themes or folder, making consultation a quick and easy process. Once a Snippet has been saved, it can always be modified at a later stage.

A very interesting feature of Net-Snippets is the bibliographical reports. They contain a list of all the recent additions that have been made with Net-Snippets, forming a sort of personal press review. There are two types of report. The first, "Folder Bibliography Report", makes a summary of all the Snippets added in a particular file, while the "Master Bibliography Report" summarizes all the Snippets added in all the files.

Net-Snippets has its own search engine. Data retrieval can be optimised by associating one or more keywords to each Snippet. To make this easier and to avoid redundancy, you can create a keyword list in Net-Snippets' options. Each time you add a snippet, just select the keywords you wish to associate with this information.

In our experience, Net-Snippets proved to be a simple and powerful tool. Saved information can be effectively shared with other Net-Snippets users. In this way, a considerable information base can be built up over a short space of time. Nonetheless, some remarks need to be made. Net-Snippets is not compatible with Netscape and Snippets can only be shared with other users that have the program. That said, this tool presents a real solution for managing online information in a highly personalized manner.

The Internet Galaxy: Reflections on the Internet, Business, and Society, Manuel Castells
http://www.botspot.com/Books/180.html

Manuel Castells is one of the world's leading thinkers on the new information age, hailed by The Economist as "the first significant philosopher of cyberspace," and by Christian Science Monitor as "a pioneer who has hacked out a logical, well-documented, and coherent picture of early 21st century civilization, even as it rockets forward largely in a blur." Now, in The Internet Galaxy, this brilliantly insightful writer speculates on how the Internet will change our lives. Castells believes that we are "entering, full speed, the Internet Galaxy, in the midst of informed bewilderment."
